Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli made no secret of the fact that the company would have rather not had to merge with Fiat and file for bankruptcy. He said they had a plan for the company but just ran out of time, using a NASCAR metaphor to make his point. “In talking to my good friend and partner Roger Penske, who runs our cars, we came into the last pit stop, we got the car tuned up we had the fastest car on the tracks and we ran out of laps,” Nardelli said. Of interest here, of course, is how this will impact Chrysler’s involvement in NASCAR. Nardelli said there will still be a budget for NASCAR. “Obviously in response to treasury we reduced that to the contractual limits that we had,” Nardelli said. “We reduced everything over and above what we were obligated to support to the driver, owner teams. We did reduce the number of cars significantly on the track this year.” — Orlando Sentinel
