NASCAR sprinting away from Big Apple

It seems clear now that NASCAR’s run of using New York City as a backdrop to crown its champion is coming to an end. That stinks for race fans, no doubt. This is racing’s equivalent of a girlfriend asking for her CDs back after breaking up. After years of trying to crack the New York market and get a track in close vicinity to Manhattan, the affair is over. NASCAR is on the verge of picking up its banquet and moving to Las Vegas. All that will be left here are the broken dreams of race fans who have longed for the sports’ acceptance in the country’s largest market. Asked if the NASCAR awards banquet would be held in New York City this year, as it has since 1981, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Posten said nothing had been finalized. But the buzz out of Las Vegas last week was that the folks there were locking up final details to landing the awards. And NASCAR.com’s David Caraviello reported it was a done deal. NASCAR officials aren’t saying as much - yet. — NY Daily News
