Gordon looking to improve Dakar effort

Coming off a first-in-class finish and third-place result in the 2009 Dakar Rally, Robby Gordon is determined to compete for the overall victory in his sixth appearance in the endurance race.

“In my mind, there is no tougher race out there than the Dakar Rally,” Gordon said. “As an avid racer and car builder, a win at the Dakar Rally would be a major accomplishment for my team. To be the first American to ever win a stage of the event was great, but to be the first American team to win the Dakar Rally would mean so much more — not just to me but to the people that are as passionate about this program as I am — from our sponsors to our dedicated employees.” nascar.com

NASCAR drivers on the hot seat

Every season there are a handful of drivers who enter the new NASCAR Sprint Cup campaign on the hot seat or under intense pressure to perform.

They, more than most drivers, have something to prove, and whether they succeed or not will determine their future.

Either they are coming off a disappointing season and need to bounce back or they have done very little so far and need a breakout season to secure their future in NASCAR’s top series.  Fox Sports

Atlanta right place for Labor Day weekend racing

There are many around Atlanta who will make the case that Atlanta Motor Speedway is as appropriate a place as any for NASCAR to be racing on Labor Day weekend. For starters, long before Darlington held its first race in 1950, Atlanta’s Lakewood Speedway was a popular holiday stop for the nation’s top racers. “It was a long-time tradition to race in Atlanta on Labor Day,” said Georgia racing historian Mike Bell. The one-mile dirt oval, the remnants of which still can be seen, hosted Indianapolis-style cars as well as early NASCAR vehicles. In its day it was known as “The Grand Old Lady” and “The Indianapolis of the South.” — Racin’ Today

Andretti said the sides are “close” to an agreement and he gave Patrick a big hug and best wishes moments before the start of Sunday’s 75-lap Sonoma Grand Prix at Infineon Raceway, the final road course event of the year. Patrick was part of a multi-car crash in Lap 1 and finished 16th. She couldn’t be reached for comment afterward regarding the potential deal with Andretti. Associated Press

Kyle Busch wins another trucks race at Bristol

Kyle Busch pulled away from Matt Crafton in the closing laps to easily win the O’Reilly 200 truck series race Wednesday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.
